  42.  Don't know how Norton's utility does it, but in DOS5.0 there is actually two
  43. format. One will physical format the disk and destory the data, the other one
  44. ( called quick format) will reset the FAT table area and if the disk has enough
  45. space left, it will keep a copy of FAT to that place so the disk can be unformat
  46. , however it does not work with normal reformatted disk.

  81. If you realy think an IBM shop can unformat disks then there should be no
  82. problem. The STE makes standard IBM disks so there is no need to use and extra
  83. programs such as DC Format. Go ahead and try whatever PC stuff you think can
  84. recover the disk. Good luck.

  102. You want to get UPS from the University of Kent.
  103. Check ARCHIE for the exact machine.

  105. UPS is 10 times better than DBX, SDB, GDB, and that ilk.
  106.  
  107. It has an Ansi C interpreter built in; you can type in code,
  108. splice it in, and hit the GO button.  Very very slick.

  156. Just thought I'd drop a note to the net letting all of our international
  157. friends know that Double Click Software will be attending, displaying and
  158. selling our wares at this year's Atari Meese show in Duesseldorf.

  226. This may be a very stupid question.  I just experienced 3 blackouts
  227. in 1 day while my ST was on.  I was wondering does blackouts have the
  228. same effect or any effect on the hardware as do surges?  Of course
  229. I do have a surge protector, but it probably didn't help any in this
  230. situation.  I might just be paranoid about this, but I'm just cautious
  231. about my cpus.

  300.     Since about two weeks, I have a new strange behaviour in my ST (it
  301. appeared about at the time the ABK-BBS'S Anti-Virus PROTECT6 was
  302. distributed through bitnet. I use it, but I don't know if both
  303. events are linked).

  305.     Some parts of the dialogs or menus resources becomes empty. This
  306. is not limited to the .RSC files since my TEMPUS has also been corrupted.
  307.  
  308.     Today this phenomena has appeared in a friend's ST, so I
  309. suspect a virus.

  311.     The VKiller V3.84, doesn't detect any virus.
  312.  
  313.     Sagrotan (V4.17) found problems with the TOS14FIX :

  364. of lharc (lharc 2.0) which has a new compression method.  It packs
  365. better than zip.  I could send Thomas Quester's version to comp.binaries,

  447. My multiscanning monitor is an Acer 7015 Multiscanning Color Monitor. It cost
  448. me about $450 dollars new at my Atari dealer.  One problem:  the IB Mult-Switch
  449. adapter I use to hook up the monitor reaures a 9-pin analog RGB monitor port,
  450. while the Acer has a 25-pin analog port.  I had to buy a 9-25 pin adaptor cable
  451. to hook things up.

  453. The monochrome is not as sharp as a dedicated monochrome monitor, but still
  454. very acceptable.  And the color works just great.

  469. I was using my 1040ST as a terminal emulator this afternoon
  470. when a power surge (?) simultaneously killed the ST modem port
  471. as well as the serial controller board on the host computer.
  472.  
  473. The serial controller board showed visible signs of heat damage
  474. but the atari board looks flawless.   Does this mean the atari
  475. damage is minor?
  476.  
  477. Could someone recommend a good repair facility --- reliable,
  478. inexpensive, and fast?

  490. On my MEGA STE I get the "Drive A: not ready / not responding" all the time,
  491. but a click on "RETRY" and everything goes well.  Could be a drive problem
  492. (my first drive stopped stepping, and this one is an old one Atari had lying
  493. around .-)

  557. Also it is not good to have cats nearby. I once had a program crash because

  560. Pure cotton and linen generate virtually no static. I guess hemp and nettle
  561. are also similar fabrics electrically (if you can get them).
  562. Wear vegetable fibre!

  576.     I just realised that on 23 November 90, that I renewed my subscription
  577. to STart for a nice sum of U.S. $69.95.  "Now isn't that special"!
  578.     Now this is a lot of money for me but due to the service rendered,
  579. a subscription is usually worth it.  Since nothing has been sent to me
  580. as far as subscription refunds or referrals, I'm wondering if there is
  581. any legal recourse?
  582.     Secondly, I wrote a technical article on hard drives and another on
  583. the HP DeskJet ink cartridges.  I never was paid for these articles.
  584.     Thirdly, Atari Explorer, which I renewed my subscription to is late,
  585. late, late.
  586.     Frankly, I'm getting a bit upset.  Is there any legal way of getting
  587. money back or subscriptions extended to Current Notes, or ST Informer?
  588. I figure that I have lost about $100.00 on Atari magazines due to no
  589. product and more money lost for unpaid articles.
